Dr. Kaye Wilkins on His Mission Trip to Haiti March 9
Kaye E. Wilkins, MD, Professor of Orthopedics and Pediatrics at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and a renowned pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, will discuss his recent mission trip to Haiti at the Men's Breakfast at The Quarry Golf Club Tuesday, March 9, 7-8 a.m.
Dr. Wilkins has spent his entire career improving the lives of patients and teaching physicians in more than 20 countries around the globe. He earned a D.V.M. degree from Colorado State University and received his MD from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He did his orthopedic training at Southwestern/Parkland followed by a year's fellowship in pediatric orthopedics in Toronto at the Hospital for Sick Children. He came to UTHSC in 1973 as a faculty member in pediatric orthopedics. Then, for 23 years he was in private practice in San Antonio; throughout this time, he remained involved, serving as the training director for pediatric orthopedics at Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital. In 2002 he returned full time to UTHSC.
He has served as President of the Texas Orthopedic Association and the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America. He has received the Distinguished Service Award from POSNA and a similar award from the Orthopedic Section of the American Academy of Orthopedics.
Dr. Wilkins' particular focus is in children's fractures. He served as a co-editor of the first three editions of Fractures in Children. He has served as a guest lecturer for many conferences on Children’s Fractures throughout the world. Currently he is involved in COUR (Children's Orthopedics in Underdeveloped Regions), an outreach program of POSNA. With this committee, he has been involved in organizing outreach orthopedic continuing education courses in many developing nations.
Dr. Wilkins’ work in continuing medical education is based on the Chinese proverb, “Give a man a fish and you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime.” “It’s about leaving behind a skill that will improve humanity long term,” he has said.
